TOKYO - Rakuten, Japan’s largest e-commerce operator, has appointed online video specialist Brightcove to act as the supporting platform for promotional videos on its Rakuten Ichiba virtual shopping mall.

According to a spokesperson from Brightcove, Rakuten will use its video technology to enable merchants to upload and publish videos detailing their products and services.

Sectors on Rakuten Ichiba include clothing, jewellery, FMCG, real estate, cars and music. The site offers a range of services such as auctions and mobile shopping.

Rakuten will also employ Brightcove-powered video across other branded websites and properties for services such as travel and online banking.

Separately, Brightcove has announced that it is to operate as the software platform for Tokyo Metropolitan Broadcasting, Television Osaka, Shizuoka Asahi Television, Chubu Nippon Broadcasting, Art iT (a web-based art magazine) and Aniplex (a Sony-owned anime and music production and distribution company).

Brightcove will assist the companies in publishing, distributing and monetising online video through the companies’ websites.

Based in the US, Brightcove established an operation in Tokyo last year with backing from Dentsu and other local investors. The company also works with clients such as Asahi Breweries, Sony Music Network Japan and Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS).
