HO CHI MINH CITY - Online penetration now stands at 22 million in Vietnam, with further growth expected, according to speakers at an industry event held this week.
Research presented by TNS at the Saigon Digital Marketing conference showed that Vietnam was now the 20th biggest web market in the world. Reach in the four major cities grew from 27 per cent to 42 per cent between 2006 and 2008, according to TNS.
Attendees interviewed by MediaTV include Friendster's head of Asia and Benjamin Grubbs, regional director of interactive media at Turner Entertainment. Both said they saw Vietnam as a market that would warrant extra attention next year.
However, online ad budgets in Vietnam remain low, totalling around US$10 million a year. One of the obstacles is the use of internet cafes, which account for 70 per cent of internet traffic. TNS used the conference to announce a research project to improve tracking in internet cafes.
