Acer hires DDB to lift China PC performance

by Anita Davis    30-Nov-09, 09:38

SHANGHAI - Taiwanese PC manufacturer Acer has appointed DDB China Group as its agency-of-record, charged with managing Acer China's through-the-line work.

Media exclusively reported the Acer pitch in October; at the time at least three other agencies were said to be involved.

Acer decided to pitch its entire marketing solutions business – which included the advertising, public relations and digital work for all its computers and processors available in China – to boost its presence in the market. It lags behind Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard and Dell in China.

Dick van Motman, president & CEO, DDB China Group, said: “We’re grateful to be chosen to help Acer in China build up to a similar leadership position as it enjoys in the rest of the world.”

The review began the same month that Acer was officially named the world’s number-two PC maker, dislodging US-based Dell from the slot. According to IDC, Acer had 14 per cent of the globe’s PC market share in this year’s third quarter, up from 11.4 per cent a year ago.

Hewlett-Packard remains the world’s leading PC manufacturer, with 20.2 per cent of the worldwide market. Lenovo and Toshiba are the fourth and fifth global PC makers, with 8.9 per cent and 5.2 per cent of the market, respectively.
