Cannes withdraws Amnesty/TBWA bronze lion

by Staff reporters    4-Sep-08, 18:39

LONDON - The Cannes Lions has withdrawn the bronze lion awarded to TBWAParis' controversial Amnesty France press campaign, after an investigation revealed that the entry did not appear in media during the entry period.

TBWA, according to a Cannes Lions statement, has "concurred" with the festival’s decision.

"It is important for the advertising and the awards industry that entries made comply fully with the rules and spirit of the Festival," said Cannes Lions chairman Terry Savage.

The campaign generated intense controversy for its depiction of human rights abuses in China, with both Amnesty International and TBWAInternational quick to distance themselves from the work earlier this year.
