English-language newspaper to launch in Indonesia

by Asiya Bakht    26-Aug-08, 16:30

JAKARTA - Lippo Group, one of Indonesia's largest conglomerates, is to launch an English-language daily newspaper called The Jakarta Globe.

To be rolled out in the next two months, the paper will target Indonesians and expatriates and will also have an online version.

The newspaper’s editorial team will be headed by deputy editor Bhimanto Suwastoyo, who has spent 23 years with AFP. The editorial team also includes Ahmad Pathoni, who has joined as news editor, and A Lin Neumann (pictured), who takes on the role of senior editorial consultant. Pathoni has previously worked in senior positions for both AFP and Reuters in Indonesia, while Neumann was the former executive editor of the Hong Kong Standard and editor in chief of the JoongAng Daily in South Korea.

“As the fourth largest country in the world, Indonesia is poised for a period of sustained economic growth. With the middle class expanding, we think this is a great time to be launching a newspaper and website,” said Neumann.

The Jakarta Globe will be funded by advertisements and subscriptions and will compete with The Jakarta Post, Indonesia’s largest English-language newspaper, founded in 1982 by four competing media groups.
